Why Dance?
I have often heard people characterize themselves as “dancers” or as someone who cannot dance. But I believe we are all dancers. Every one of us is capable of expressing ourselves through our bodies, and I believe we yearn to move in ways that clear our minds, free our souls and leave us feeling more connected to Life.
For the past 20 years I have been using dance to change my life in ways that have brought me closer to myself and to who it is I most want to be.
When I first got introduced to Journeydance, I had been practicing yoga for many years. Lots had changed for me through the practices of asana and pranayama. But surprisingly enough, when I started dancing, a whole new way of being opened up for me.
Moving my body in new and unusual ways as well as being off a mat, broke down old thought patterns and tensions in my body I hadn’t been able to shake despite lots of trying. Dancing to my own rhythm made me more courageous to be more fully myself. Able to say what was on my mind and make decisions that really supported me. Whether others agreed with me or not.
Being on the dance floor gives me a place to express all of my emotions in a way that allows them to move through me faster and with greater integrity. But what I cherish most is that through the dance, I feel the most directly connected to my own aliveness and to All That Is.
So, if you’re willing to move and be moved, if you yearn to be more fully expressed, and if you love inspiring and epic music that uplifts your soul, Journeydance could be the form for you. No dance experience necessary. Ever. Why? Because it’s in you whether you know it or not.
