with Pyeng Threadgill
Note: Join Threadgill for Your Soul’s Music: A Writing, Movement, and Sound Workshop on Saturday, April 27th.
Join vocalist/composer, voice and movement teacher, and author Pyeng Threadgill as she reads excerpts from her recent memoir, Lost & Found: Finding The Power In Your Voice, and shares a special evening of music.
Growing up in the 1980s in the heart of New York City's downtown music and art scene became fertile ground for seeds of creativity, doubt, and eventual empowerment for Pyeng Threadgill. From motherhood to travel, from ancestry to the body—evolving from a passionate performer to injured performer, from voice student to voice and movement teacher—Lost & Found examines the visceral and ephemeral experiences of the voice, for the body and for oneself in the world, as both a spiritual and political act. Threadgill is joined by guest guitarist and Amherst local John Caban.
Pyeng Threadgill is an American vocalist, composer, author, video artist and voice and movement teacher. As a vocalist/performer she creates what she calls New Porch Music based on the traditions of Black American Folk, Soul, Jazz and improvisational music. Threadgill uses these Porch Sessions to create connected conversations whereby audiences may reflect on their own life stories and identities for healing and empowerment.
Threadgill has performed internationally at festivals, from The Cognac Blues Festival (France) and San Sebastián Jazz Festival (Spain), to Montréal Jazz Festival and others. In the US she has played at Jazz mainstays such as San Francisco’s Yoshi’s, Atlanta Jazz Festival, and New York’s Blue Note.
Threadgill is a recipient of the fellowship in music composition from New York Foundation for the Arts for her album "Portholes To A Love & Other Short Stories". She currently teaches at NYU at The Clive Davis Institute in addition to having her own private practice. Threadgill lives in Brooklyn, New York with her husband and their dog Pony. She is a proud parent to daughter Luna, now a sophomore in college majoring in music and photography.

What readers are saying about the book:
“Pyeng’s ‘Lost & Found: Finding the Power in your Voice’ is a beautifully structured book that spoke to me about listening and hearing, with fresh and honest prose and poetry about herself, her family, friends, ancestors and mentors.”
“As a black woman, artist, and thinker, Pyeng’s writings make me feel seen. The imagery and storytelling is a sweet deep dive into the twists and turns of becoming. Each page invites a recipe for finding your own superpowers with curiosity and tapping into the divine spiritual connection of sound in the body. A beautiful read and a compelling journey.”
“First off, I love the way Pyeng can turn anything into a song! After a weeklong retreat with friends in the woods, listening to her greeting “Mr. Hedgehog” with her own sweet song is a memory I will cherish. In Lost and Found, Pyeng challenges readers to find their own sweet songs and to discover that perhaps finding one’s voice has more to do with changing one’s inner monologue and less with what one says aloud. If you are curious how artists live & create or if you are an artist looking for inspiration & community, this book is for you!"
