with Matthew Andrews
Have you heard of the Rig Veda? It's the root text of the Sanskritic yoga traditions. It's been widely neglected and poorly understood by most modern yoga practitioners. But its symbols conceal a cosmology and practical teachings about psychology, spiritual aspiration, and human evolution.
100 years ago Sri Aurobindo brought revelatory insights to this ancient text, and this 5-session course will explore his revelations and their implications for our daily lives. No prior experience with yoga philosophy is necessary--just a curiosity about the roots of yoga and what they have to offer that's relevant to us today.
Lesson Plan:
Week One - Sri Aurobindo and the Secret of the Veda
Matthew will introduce Sri Aurobindo and his revolutionary and revelatory analysis of the Rig Veda’s Secret message, including the multidimensional cosmology and the layers of reality that it describes.Week Two - Agnimiile
The first character of the Rig Veda Samhita is Agni, and there are more hymns to Agni than any other deva—we’ll seek to understand and experience the being of Agni.Week Three - Surya and the Guardians of Light
We’ll explore the devas, children of the Infinite Mother, who embody love and truth and support the evolution of consciousness toward wholeness.Week Four - Indra, the Angirasa Rishis, and Freeing the Cows
We’ll seek an understanding of one of the central thematic stories of the Rig Veda Samhita, in which Indra frees the cows that have been hidden in a cave by the Panis.Week Five - Usha, Saraswati and Aditi
We’ll learn about Usha (the Divine Dawn) and Aditi (Mother of the Legions of Light) and Saraswati (the River of Divine Inspiration), and what these forms of the Divine Mother teach us about ourselves and yoga.
