Collective Spotlight: Jorrie Morgan
Meet Jorie Morgan, Certified Sound Healer.
Why did you want to become a sound healer?
I stumbled upon sound healing through an online spiritual community. One of the membership perks was a monthly, virtual sound bath. I found myself listening to the recordings over and over again, especially when I was overstimulated. The sound baths had a way of resetting my very active nervous system. I felt great, even transformed, after these sessions. I tried an in-person sound bath in this region, but the practitioner was not trauma-informed, and I had a bad experience. This led me to invest in a crystal bowl of my own so that I could find a quieter way into live practice. Over time, I invested in other bowls and chimes. I was benefiting so much from my private sound healing practice that I decided to train so that I could help others. I kept hearing stories about challenging sound bath experiences, so I went into my training with a focus on investigating this phenomenon. I wanted to find out what things might have contributed to those adverse reactions so that I could create sound baths that worked for other sensitive people.
What do you gain from this work?
I absolutely love doing sound healing work. It is the first type of healing practice I have been part of that works on me as much as my clients. The sounds are so beautiful, and the vibrations work in a powerful and cellular way. The old adage, “Healer, heal thyself,” manifests naturally through sound healing. I am also benefiting from specifically tailoring work for survivors and HSPs (Highly Sensitive People). This approach requires that I take care of myself and regularly engage in grounding and energy-clearing practices.
What do you hope your clients experience working with you?
I hope that my clients experience a level of deep relaxation that allows their brilliant bodies to engage in whatever healing needs to occur naturally. After a session, I hope they feel fortified and centered so that they can re-enter their lives from a place of strength and tenderness. And I hope that they feel more connected to the dreamy and intuitive parts of themselves that often get stimulated by entraining to theta-level vibrations.
How does your work inform your activism or understanding of the world?
I am deeply committed to helping our world and all its beings heal from trauma. There are so many systems that actively harm and traumatize on a regular basis. I’m engaged in visualizing and creating communities and systems that value balance, belonging, and healing. I am a queer, non-binary trauma survivor, and finding places where I can be my full self and feel comfortable can be difficult. I believe that creating safe spaces and moments of peace can make a huge impact. The more I work to heal from traumatic experiences that happened to me, the more I notice how much healing is needed by others. And I feel deeply honored that I can help facilitate wellness through sound healing work.
What's your favorite season of the year and why?
I love summer in New England! I have an intimate bond with water; I was born in the summer (my astrological sign is cancer for both sun and rising), and I adore the color blue.
What has made you smile recently that you want to share?
My partner and I have the great privilege of sharing our lives and home with a gorgeous, sweet, and hilarious dog, Maisy. She makes me laugh and smile multiple times every day.
